Happy Mother's Day to me! The Kitchen Aid mixer that I ordered off e-bay has finally arrived! It's red and beautiful and I love it! And the first order of business was Gianormous chocolate chip cookies!
The baking site that I love, Cookie Madness, has been trying off and on for like a month to clone the Levain Bakery cookies that won against Bobby Flay on Throwdown (we just love this show!). She came up with what she said was a really good clone, and I've been waiting for my mixer to come to try the recipe out. I was super impressed! The qualities of the Levain cookie that they were trying to clone are:
Number one, it's HUGE! bigger than the palm of your hand, and about two inches thick!
Number two, it has a hard kind of outside shell, and it's gooey in the middle.
Number three, they are supposed to be delicious!
Mine came out beautifully. I'm not sure that they really achieved the inner gooeyness that they were supposed to achieve, but they were wonderful none the less. And I think I'll fiddle around with baking time and temp a little more to see how if it helps, but even without being 'gooey' inside, they were still soft and delicious! And did I mention HUGE!
Giant Chocolate Chip Cookies
8 ounces (two sticks) unsalted butter, room temp
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten
3 cups BREAD flour (13 1/2 oz)
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/3 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 to 1 1/3 cups coarsely chopped, untoasted walnuts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Beat butter and both sugars just until they come together. Don’t overbeat. Add the egg and beat just until incorporated. Mix together the flour, salt and baking soda. When thoroughly mixed, add to batter and stir just until blended. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts. The dough should be neither sticky nor dry.
Divide dough into about 12 mounds, but keep the mounds kind of raggedy. That is, don’t smash them into compact balls. Bake on ungreased insulated cookie sheet or an upside down rimmed cookie sheet for 20 minutes at 350. Cool on sheet for about 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool.
This should make a dozen 4 oz. cookies or eight 6 oz. cookies.
Try it, you'll like it!

Hey! I am so glad you guys found my blog. It will be fun being able to see what is going on with my family instead of having to catch up on the last 3 years every family reunion! I LOVE throw down too...in fact I just saw that cookie episode like 2 days ago and was wondering how to get my hands on a recipe like it...so thanks for doing all the work for me!
YUM!
Tara- just had to tell you I tried these cookies today. Fun recipe! I made mine a tiny bit smaller and didn't cook them as long, so it made about 17. But the kids loved them and they're still super big. We had nieces to play today, so it was a fun treat for the cousins. Thanks for sharing. PS. your mixer IS very cute! I love mine too!
These pictures make me very hungry....I wonder if I have any chocolate in the house. I could NEVER make cookies on a regular basis because I would be the only one to eat them. And that would be bad. Hey - when are you in Spokane next? I'd love to talk to you.
ooh, they look yummy! Thanks for the recipe.
I love the red! I can hear it now whipping up many delicious treats!
